Let your turf breathe!
One of the best practices you can do for your turf is to have it aerated and overseeded on a regular basis. Aeration should be a regular part of your annual landscape maintenance program to reduce soil compaction and thatch in check.
Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes and removing plugs of soil and grass to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate down to the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produces stronger, more vigorous blades of grass.
The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction. Compacted soils prevent proper air circulation, and reduce the amount of water and nutrients that reach the root system. Aeration also helps to break up layers of thatch that may be laying against the soil, beneath standing blades of grass
This summer, we have experienced above normal rainfall. That rain fall contributes to the compaction of soil making aeration a required action to keep lawns lush and thick for season to come.
Benefits to Core Aeration and Overseeding:
- Fills in bare spots to provide a thick, green turf
- Constrict weeds and crabgrass
- Decreases soil compaction
- Helps expand root development
- Allows nutrients, water, and oxygen to reach deep into the soil
- Improvement in overall plant health
- Helps decompose the thatch layer
- Increased seed germination throughout seed to soil contact
